A group of students at the University of South Carolina has created a stone paving stone from scratch, using only the ingredients found in their own home, and using it to make a few of their own homemade baked goods.
The students are building a small, custom-made stone pavers with their own clay.
“Our stone paver is not just for our home, it’s for our whole community, which is really the core of the community,” said senior Lillian Tabor.
“It’s really important for the people to have their own resources, their own way of making things.
We wanted to show that if you’re able to do it yourself, it really does make a difference.”
The students are making their pavers from scratch using a combination of clay and sand, and they’re using a special mixture of water, cement and lime to make the concrete.
The group says they’ve made the pavers out of “paved stone” which is made from rock that has been cut and polished.
The pavers have been sitting in their home for about a year, and their new stone paving is the result of a collaboration between the university and local residents.
“We made a few little pavers in our backyard,” said freshman Alex Broughton.
“We thought it would be cool to make them on the porch, but we were afraid that it would end up being a giant piece of sand.
So we just put them on our porch and we have been building up these pavers for about six months.
We’re really happy with the result, and I think the community really loves them.”
The pavers were made out of the material that students make for their homemade pies and cakes.
Broughtons mom, Laura, is the stone paaver, and she and her husband started making pavers when they were in high school.
“It’s kind of funny, we’re still making pies, but it’s a lot more fun now that we’re actually making paver stones for baked goods,” said Laura.
“I don’t even have to be in the kitchen, I can be sitting at home and just have a cup of tea and a slice of pie.”
The group says that it’s important to keep a close eye on the quality of the materials used in their homemade pavers.
“You can make things out of clay or sand or whatever you can find,” said junior Kelsey Johnson.
“But you need to be careful, and make sure that the material is consistent with the stone you’re making it out of.”
The school has also been using clay to make some of the paverstones.
The team says they can make the pavelings out of two to three different types of clay, including some that are specifically designed to prevent the stone from cracking.
They’re also using a mix of water and lime.
The paverstone will be used to create a custom-built cake to serve as a decorative centerpiece in their school’s new stone pavilion.
“This stone is going to make up the front wall of our new stone center, which we’re going to be using as the centerpiece of the school,” said Lillian.
“And it will be going on a pedestal that we’ll be able to put on the back of our house and then it’s going to sit there and we’ll have our own seating area, and we can have a whole bunch of cakes and pies to go and share.”
The new pavers are made using a custom mortar and pestle that is specifically designed for pavers and is the same mortar that students use to make bricks and other home goods.
“I’m really excited that this has become a very popular hobby in our community,” Tabor said.
“The kids have been really supportive of it, and it’s just amazing to see it all come together.”
